Massage therapy can do much more
than simply help you relax
How can massage therapy help your health and well-being?
Loosen up fascia
Fascia is a connective tissue that surrounds the muscles, bones, nerves and organs of the body. Massage therapists can release tension, that may be a cause of trauma or inflammation, by using a technique called Myofascial Release, in which they use sustained
pressure to stretch and lengthen the tissue. The benefits include improved range of motion, improved posture and pain relief. The most common fascia injury is plantar fasciitis, which is heel pain resulting in overuse of your feet.
Reduce muscle tension
Massage therapy can increase and improve circulation, which
enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscle cells and helps remove waste products. It helps decrease pain and ease areas of muscle tension, and also improve posture and flexibility. Used preventatively, massage therapy can help avoid joint or muscle pain.
Improve sleep
Massage therapy promotes relaxation and sleep. It induces a relaxation response which lowers the heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. Because it increases production of serotonin, which helps you to relax, massage therapy in turn produces melatonin,
which helps you to fall asleep. When your muscles are more relaxed, it’s easier for you to find a comfortable position to fall asleep.
Reduce stress
Physical touch is relaxing and therapeutic. It also increases serotonin and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters that can help reduce depression and anxiety.
